About the course
This course is for adults who would like to teach English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). It is an introductory course for those who have little or no previous experience of teaching in this subject area.
It is also suitable for teachers who are qualified to teach other curriculum areas but wish to gain an ESOL specialism. The Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) course starts in October each year at our Digbeth campus.
You will understand the principles of effective teaching and acquire practical teaching skills. Learn how to analyse language for teaching, understand how adults learn and the role of the teacher and the learner. You will also learn how to develop your knowledge and skills to gain confidence and professional knowledge.
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants for the course must be at least 18 years old*, be educated to the standard required for entry into higher education and be a proficient English language user (CEFR level high C1 or above). *It is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at the college’s discretion.
Where can I progress next?
CELTA is recognised by most employers as the initial qualification for teaching ESOL, so you will be able to apply for employment in the UK or abroad on successful completion.
Once you are in a teaching post or have secured some teaching hours, most UK employers will expect you to continue your training to a diploma in teaching and training or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), if you have not already done so.
How will you learn?
You will undertake a total of six hours teaching practice working with ESOL classes at two levels of ability. In addition, you will be required to research and prepare for teaching and assignments which may involve up to 10 hours of study at home each week.
