Whether you want to sell the short story that you produce, enter it into a writing competition, or use it as the basis for a novel, this course can fast-track your writing goals.
As you work through each module, you will learn why the many genres of speculative fiction are so successful, where to find countless ideas for your stories, and how to create realistic characters and the worlds they inhabit.
By the end of the course, you will have written a 1500-word short story that you can confidently submit to a publisher or use as the foundation for your much larger alternate universe series.
Our journey started all the way over in South Africa. In the beginning, we were a duo – Nichola Meyer and Lisa Lazarus – launching a single course in freelance journalism to a modest group of students.
Fast forward to today, and we’ve grown our humble venture into a truly global institution, boasting a presence in the UK, South Africa, and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Our offerings have blossomed, too. We now provide 35 unique writing courses, guided by a passionate team of 27 international tutors, and have celebrated the achievements of thousands of successful graduates.
This course will cover the tools writers use to write fiction, in either long or short form. We will begin by developing a character to be central to a piece of fiction. From there we will go on to workshop story, tone and setting.

Two groups of ten students form close supportive units, each working with a tutor. Writers work with prose and poetry. They critique each other’s work. They are exposed to other writers and the writing world, listen to guest speakers and are introduced to a range of good writing by their tutor.
Over the course of 11 modules and 20 writing assignments, you will be tutored by highly experienced photojournalists who specialise in the field of travel. They’ll take the guesswork and the trial and error out of travel writing by guiding you through every stage of this exciting journey.
