Located in Wright’s Cove on the eastern shore of Bedford Basin, Halifax Harbour, Dartmouth Yacht Club (DYC) is a vibrant sailing community that has been fostering a love for boating for over 60 years.

A Brief History

DYC may be younger than some other yacht clubs in the area, but its roots run deep. The club originated from a meeting of boating enthusiasts in March 1962 at a building on the corner of Ochterloney and Wentworth Streets.

Chaired by Mr. Cyril G. Hubley, this meeting, held under the Dartmouth Chamber of Commerce, marked the beginning of DYC, with Mr. Hubley becoming the first Commodore.

Memorandum Of Association

On December 7, 1962, DYC signed its original Memorandum of Association with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies.

This crucial document, signed by key founding members, including the first Commodore and Vice Commodore, established the club’s not-for-profit status in Nova Scotia.

Official Charter

DYC received its official charter on December 10, 1962, incorporating as a non-profit organization. The inaugural meeting took place on January 9, 1963, where twenty-five individuals were named as Chartered Members.

The first Management and Trustee Committee meeting followed on January 24, 1963, at the former Dartmouth Businessmen’s Club on Newcastle Street. The committee worked diligently to draft the club’s first Constitution and By-Laws, inspired by various club models, including those from Boston.
