Traditionally, the word Kuttab in Arabic referred to the local community school which children attended to learn Quran, Arabic and religious knowledge. As regular gatherings to acquire knowledge, Kuttabs existed since the time of the Prophet. During his caliphate, the caliph Umar took special care in organizing and spreading Kuttabs in the different corners of the Islamic world.
He assigned great companions to lead them, such as ^Abdullah ibn Mas^oud in the city of Koofah, Imran ibn Hussayn in the city of Bassrah, Muath ibn Jabal in Al-Sham and others. With time, the Kuttabs continued to grow in size to become large institutes hosting thousands of students in some instances. They also grew in number there was a time when there was more than 230 Kuttabs in Damascus alone.
