Description
Language has a profound impact on discrimination, either by reinforcing stereotypes and discriminatory assumptions or by challenging and eliminating them. Unfortunately, the concept of 'political correctness' has often oversimplified these complex issues, leading to confusion and misunderstanding. This course clarifies the relationship between language and discrimination, dispelling common misconceptions and offering a more nuanced approach.
Rather than simply banning certain words, which has led to criticism of 'political correctness gone mad,' this course focuses on promoting a deeper understanding of how language influences perceptions of equality and diversity. We will explore how some language forms, though unproblematic, are often disapproved of, while certain discriminatory language remains unchallenged. Additionally, the fear of being criticized for using offensive language has led many to avoid discussions on this important topic entirely.
Dr. Neil Thompson, a recognized expert in equality, diversity, and inclusion, addresses these challenges with clarity and insight. Drawing on his extensive experience, he explains how confusions and oversimplifications about the role of language in discrimination can cause harm, and how we can use language to empower rather than harm.
Who This Course Is For:
- Anyone who wants to promote equality and diversity by challenging discrimination through thoughtful and appropriate language.
- Individuals interested in developing linguistic sensitivity and creating an inclusive, respectful environment through language.
- Professionals and advocates looking to address discrimination and raise awareness about the impact of language in promoting fairness and inclusion.
