This course is an introduction to 3D printing. The course will cover important settings for 3d printing such as infill, layer height, materials, speed, etc, as well as going over where to find those things in the slicing software and making adjustments. The 3D printing course is a two-part course that takes place over two sessions on Saturday with a 30 minute break in between.
The story begins in 2010 when four makers got together to create ATX Hackerspace as a community workshop – a place to work on projects together. Although originally formed as an LLC, ATXHS always operated in the spirit of a nonprofit as an all volunteer run organization with no paid staff. Any profits seen were always invested back into the space to improve the experience and offerings for members.
Meanwhile, Asmbly was created in 2019 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit community makerspace in Austin, Texas. Asmbly aspired to bring the same caliber of tools and equipment to the community, while growing offerings and developing a professionally managed organization.
In mid-2020, Asmbly and ATXHS began discussing a collaboration to help grow the makerspace community in Austin. After realizing each had a piece the other was missing, Asmbly and ATXHS decided to join forces in April 2021 to create Austin’s largest nonprofit makerspace operating as Asmbly at 9701 Dessau Rd, Suite #304.
Where we are going
Our mission is to enrich Austin’s creative maker community by providing a top notch creative space with tools and educational opportunities in a multidisciplinary, inviting, and member-focused setting. As an educational nonprofit, we will continue to expand class offerings to both our members and the community at large. Our classes already run the gamut from introductory woodworking to advanced welding, laser cutting, 3D printing and more.
We continually aspire to expand the disciplines offered at Asmbly, but want to be sure we do it right. We would love to offer jewelry making and ceramics in the near future and expanding into a larger space will likely be the appropriate time for these additions. Until then, we will be working to improve our current offerings.
Hiring a full-time staff to help manage our growing operations is one of our goals. We’re proud to have a few part-time staff providing essential support to our Education and Membership Teams. However, by and large, Asmbly runs on the efforts of dedicated volunteers. Each member plays a part in helping the space to flourish, from keeping the workshop and bathrooms clean, to planning for the future and managing our finances.
Learning how to create 3D printable geometry in various applications; AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, 3D Studio Max. Prepare your design for 3D printing and check for errors. We will discuss the various techniques for repairing errors.

3D printing (also known as Additive Manufacturing or AM) is a process used to quickly create or "print out" three-dimensional objects using computer control to fuse materials together.
Come learn to use Blender to create your own 3D models and prepare them to be 3D printed. This course will cover sketching designs, 3D modeling them, and how to use 3D printers and their filament!
