The purpose of the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills needed to progress either to employment or to further study.
What will I study?
You will complete 4 units in total:
Introduction to bookkeeping - This unit provides students with an understanding of manual and digital bookkeeping systems, including the associated documents and processes. Students will learn the basic principles that underpin double-entry bookkeeping systems.
Principles of bookkeeping controls - This unit builds on the knowledge and skills acquired from studying Introduction to Bookkeeping and explores control accounts, journals and reconciliations.
Students will develop the ability to prepare the value added tax (VAT) control accounts as well as the receivables and payables ledger accounts.
They'll use the journal to record a variety of transactions, including the correction errors. Students will be able to redraft the initial trial balance, following adjustments.
Principles of costing - This unit gives students an introduction to the principles of basic costing and builds a solid foundation in the knowledge and skills required for more complex costing and management accounting tasks.
Students will learn the importance of the costing system as a source of information that allows management to plan, make decisions and control costs.
The business environment - This unit provides knowledge and understanding of key business concepts and their practical application in the external and internal environment in which students will work.
Students will gain an understanding of the legal system and principles of contract law and an appreciation of the legal implications of setting up a business and the consequences this may have. This unit will also give an understanding of how organisations are structured and where the finance function fits.
How will I be assessed?
All AAT qualification are assessed via externally marked exams that are completed in our AAT exam centre. Within this qualification you will undertake 4 exams, 1 for each of the above units.
Entry requirements
Minimum of 3 GCSEs at grade D/3, with maths GCSE or equivalent at grade C/4. Functional Skills level 1 will be accepted as an alternative to GCSEs. No previous work experience within accountancy required. Although preferred, no previous work experience within accountancy is required.

Students should choose to study the Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping if they wish to develop an understanding of the basics of manual bookkeeping.
Bookkeeping course is offered by DNT Chartered Accountants. Our speakers are individually selected as local experts in their field, and therefore have considerable regional knowledge and experience.
IAB Computerised Bookkeeping course is offered by Belfast Met.The Belfast Business School is dedicated to ‘leading the city to work’ and offer a diverse range of relevant part time programmes delivering skills aligned to economic growth.
If you want to become a certified bookkeeper with AATQB (AAT Qualified Bookkeeper) status, then you must complete the AAT bookkeeping course successfully.
The AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping develops existing skills and knowledge to an advanced level for anyone wishing to pursue a career in bookkeeping or are running their own business.
