They are introduced to the current classification system of mental disorders, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR), and consider its strengths and weaknesses in an increasingly complex field.
Psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic, and sociocultural approaches to major Axis I and Axis II disorders are presented. The class employs critical thinking to examine current controversies over classification, assessment, and treatment of mental illness.
