This course is designed and structured to provide training in the safe use of abrasive wheels and meets with the requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 98).

This course is aimed at all individuals who are required to use, maintain or manage the use of these items and would be particularly useful for anyone that may need to Risk Assess the activities of abrasive wheel work in their workplace.

 

Course Content:

  • Introduction to PUWER, covering, suitability, maintenance, training and instructions

  • Hazards

  • Precautions

  • HAVS & noise

  • PPE

  • Types of equipment

  • Safety of equipment, including guarding and insulation/earthing

  • Types of blade, 1, 21, 41 & 42

  • Explanation of an abrasive wheel, how it is made and what the wheel informs you

  • Understanding 5 key points of information on any abrasive wheel,

  • Brief assessment with wheels being handed out, and students pointing out information that may be missing

  • Types of accidents with abrasive wheels

  • Disc contamination and damage.

  • Brief assessment with handouts on damaged wheels

  • Safe storage and transportation

  • Dressing a wheel

  • Mounting a wheel, including damaged flanges and pin spanners

  • Pre user checks on machines, including dead man switch’s, locking buttons, leads etc.
