If you or someone you know would like to learn to sail, we may be just what you are looking for. All instructors are Yachting New Zealand qualified and place an equal importance on the safety of the student and enjoyment of the course to create a positive environment in which to learn. From age 16+
We provide all the equipment, but participants are advised to bring along a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a warm jumper, shoes that can get wet, a water bottle, a change of clothes (minimal wardrobe needed) and a spray jacket.
For the mature student wishing to get into sailing, there is the Adult Learn to Sail course, aimed at complete beginners and those looking to refresh their skills. This is a fun and accessible entry into the sport and provides participants with further opportunities to improve and develop sailing skills and techniques.
Our three-week course is held over three successive Saturdays, enabling each participant to reach a level of competence which is recognised by a certificate at the completion of the course.
The course is run with the Clubs fleet of specially modified J24 keelboats. Learn to Sail provides a safe and enjoyable introduction to keelboat sailing for beginners. To ensure quality instruction, each boat has just four students and one instructor, which means all the students play an active role, including helming the yacht.
The Level One course includes an introduction to boat handling skills and essential safety knowledge that allows participants the freedom of sailing small boats with guidance from an instructor or coach.
A follow-up Level Two course, run over four Saturdays or two weekends, builds on the skills already learnt and adds instruction on anchoring, navigation, spinnakers, seamanship. From there, the possibilities are endless, and any sailor will tell you no matter what their level of experience, they never stop learning.
Our instructors are with you every step of the way offering support and helping you advance your sailing skills. We offer a comprehensive training programme, from learn to sail though to advanced racing and crew placement on Club members yachts.
History books can be looked back to with pride and envy of new sailors to the Club. The Kendall family became the first brother and sister to have both won gold for New Zealand. Bruce Kendall followed up his bronze medal in the Boardsailing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games by taking gold four years later in Pusan, South Korea. His sister Barbara continued the family tradition, winning gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games in the Boardsailing. Barbara went on to claim silver and bronze medals at the next two Olympics.
Aarron McIntosh continued the Clubs phenomenal Boardsailing success, by winning a bronze at the 2000 Sydney Games, adding to his earlier three Mistral world championship triumphs.
Brad Marsh won the Volvo Ocean Race in 2011-12 with the French team Groupama 4 and received the overall Abu Dhabi Seamanship Award. In 1993/94 Ross Field won the Whitbread 60 Division in Yamaha sailing under the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club burgee, an outstanding achievement. Many other Bucklands Beach Yacht Club sailors – too many to name individually – have and continue to enjoy success at national level.
We are proud of every success enjoyed by all of our talented members and hope that our members feel the wraparound support the Club offers each individual as they realise their sporting goals and achievements. The Club does all it can to continue to provide an avenue for those in search of success on the water and offers every encouragement to the next generation of Bucklands Beach Yacht Club members keen to write their names into the New Zealand sailing history books.
