Tap originated in the early 19th century from African-American and Irish dance forms. As enslaved peoples had traditional African percussion instruments taken from them, they created rhythmic dances with percussive sounds to maintain their traditions.
This style merged with wooden clog dancing brought to America by Irish immigrants, and thus the art of Tap dancing was born. 20th century Tap was pivotal in American culture, ranging from Vaudeville acts and the Harlem Renaissance, all the way to Hollywood and Broadway.
Tap dancing is characterized by shoes with metal on the toes and heel that create the percussive sounds highlighted by the rhythmic motions of the feet.

Founded in September 2015, Dovetail Studios has become a community space for the arts on the North Side of Chicago. Dovetail Studios provides high quality dance training for dancers of all ages in a fun and encouraging environment.
Like a sport, dance has a trajectory. At Dovetail, we prioritize individual growth in whatever technique a dancer chooses to study. Our studio has training opportunities for the very young all the way to the working professional dancer.
Our younger dance students get to witness the trajectory from beginner to professional just by being in the space. The mix of ages and levels under one roof makes training at Dovetail quite a unique experience.
Our children’s program includes an audition-based Nutcracker performance in our studio theatre for the Fall session and a studio-wide recital performance held off site for the Winter session.
Tap is a historical dance form that emphasizes rhythm, syncopation and musicality of the feet in tap shoes. Combinations can be performed to music with the feet following the beats provided, or without music (a cappella) where the feet generate the musicality on their own.
Students ages 7 and up are invited to move beyond the combination class into a 45-minute tap technique class. This, fun, high energy class will emphasize proper tap progressions, styles, and rhythms. Tap students will perform one routine in the Spring Recital.
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of tap dance. Students will learn tap terminology while working on the embodiment of rhythm, coordination, and musicality. (Suggested attire: comfortable clothing for movement, tap shoes)
Classes are fun and fast-paced and are offered to students ages 5+ in tap. Tap is an excellent way to develop rhythm, coordination, dexterity, and agility that carries over to other dance disciplines, academics, and athletics.
Theater and Rhythm tap classes are offered to tappers of all ages and levels starting at 5 years old. JazzJazz classes explore varieties of dance styles, and start at the age of five.
