Course Details

Suitable for Healthcare practitioners who hold a professional registration with a regulatory body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) who would like to develop and enhance their theoretical knowledge and practical skills when managing complex, hard to heal wounds.

This module is designed for practitioners registered with a regulatory body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council or the Health and Care Professions Council.

They will be confident and competent in wound care management, have suitable educational experience and wish to expand their scope of practice in the care and management of complex wounds that require sharp debridement.

The module critically examines the evidence based for advanced wound management and extended sharp debridement scope practice, supporting learners to critically apply the evidence-based principles to clinical practice.

Entry Requirements and Timetable

120 credits at level 6 (BScH/BAH), to have an identified practice assessor/supervisor in place, to have support from your line manager.

Module Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate the evidence base for wound healing, impaired wound healing, and when debridement is indicated.

  • Critically appraise consultation styles in wound assessment that lead to collaborative clinical decision making, consent and the ethics of client wellbeing associated with sharp debridement.

  • Critically appraise the evidence base for advanced techniques used in wound debridement and demonstrate how they are safely employed in person centred care.

  • Analyse and apply the ethical and legal responsibilities associated with the provision of extended scope of practice techniques for professional registrants and develop awareness of mechanisms for the protection of the public and practitioner.
