DurationThe Montessori Orientation Course for Ages 6–12 is an introduction to the developmental characteristics and needs of children ages 6–12.
It supports understanding of this developmental stage for parents, caregivers, school staff, or any individual seeking general knowledge about Montessori developmental theory and education.
Successful participation in all Orientation Course Requirements leads to award of the AMI Orientation Course Certificate of Completion at the 6–12 level.
The course is designed such that it highlights the role of an adult as a service to the child's development.
It opens the way for adults to explore how best to support the optimal development of children at home, in school, and in a Montessori prepared environment.
Course Objectives
• To gain general knowledge of the Montessori approach to child development and education
• To explore how an adult can best support optimal development for this age group in any environment and as needed, to identify and remove obstacles to optimal development
• To understand the powers for development active at this stage, and the needs and characteristics of children at this stage of development
• To understand the general importance of Observation as a basis for providing developmental support for 6–12-year-old children in any environment.
Course Components
Course work consist of lectures, readings, discussions and observation of children.
Lectures
Course lectures include the following topics and will touch upon some of the main principles of Montessori education.
Observation
Observation of elementary age children is a requirement for the certification. Students will need to observe children in a mixed-age elementary environment or other spaces that are not structured and children are free to engage themselves. All the students will be required to record and submit a written report of their observations along with their reflections.
Course Delivery
The course combines the following:
• Online lectures, with time for questions and discussions • Presentation of videos, photographs
• Reading and Group discussions
Language
All lectures will be in English. Course work will need to be presented in English.
Course Duration and Schedule
The Course is delivered Online through Zoom Sessions and will cover 60 hours of work. 33 hours of work with be synchronous (when we meet online) and the rest 27 hours will be asynchronous (readings and assignments to be done at your own time)
Eligibility
Candidates from all walks of life and from different professions are welcome. The course is open to anyone who is interested in child development, and would like to know more about the Montessori philosophy.
Course Assignments
There are three required written Assignments including an Observation Assignment. Due dates of assignments will be informed by the trainer after the start of the course and need to be submitted in the Google classroom.
If an assignment does not contain all components for a satisfactory mark, the essay reader will indicate what is needed and you will have an opportunity to resubmit the paper in order to meet the requirements.
