Course Details

This two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and reflects a growing interest in games design and animation - digital, cgi or traditional stop-motion. It is designed to enable you to progress to university and develop your expertise in preparation for a career in the industry. The course makes use of London's great resources with visits to industry shows, theatres, films and museums.

About the Course

You will work in our amazing multimedia suites, gaining experience in 3D modelling, rigging, level design, asset and character development, and introductory programming.

You will use industry-standard software including Maya, Mudbox, Unity, After Effects, and Photoshop.

We believe that students need to be engaged in every aspect of this subject and foster imaginative skills to feedback on their design work - and we also want the course to be fun!

The course is taught by industry professional animation and games design lecturers.

You will study:

 

  • Visual recording in art and design

  • Materials, techniques, and processes in art and design

  • Ideas and concepts in art and design

  • Communication through art and design

  • Contextual influences in art and design

  • Image manipulation using computer applications

  • Typefaces and letter forms

  • 3D animation

  • 2D animation production

  • Computer game engines

In the second year, you will work on your own projects, developing games elements and animated sequences.

This flexible approach builds a solid foundation for further study or employment, while enabling you to develop a specialised programme of study according to your own interests.

Your student learning adviser will guide and support you throughout your course and in the second year you will receive guidance for university applications.

This course leads to a UAL Diploma in Year 1 followed by a UAL Extended Diploma in Year 2

Entry Requirements

4 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C / grades 9-4 or a merit or distinction at Level 2 with functional skills in English and maths. We will ask to see a portfolio of your work when you come to college for your interview.

Progression

Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, Higher National Diploma (HND) or BA (Hons) degree at university, or relevant employment.

Assessment Method

The course is continuously assessed throughout the two years. In the final term of the course a final major project is assessed, examined and assessed externally.
