This AQ is offered by the Faculty of Education.This course will extend, develop and apply the understanding and knowledge obtaining upon completion of Part 1 theories and models in the design, delivery, programming, and assessment of special education.

It focuses on learning disabilities in more detail and emphasizes classroom management and maintaining an inclusionary design.  

Course Outline

  • Individual Education Plan and the inclusive classroom and parents as partners
  • Gifted students
  • Learning disabilities
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Speech and language disorders
  • Behavior and emotional disorders
  • Mild intellectual disability
  • Low incidence exceptionalities
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Autism
  • Deaf and hard of hearing , blind and low vision
  • Physical and chronic medical conditions
  • Enhancing independent learning and living
  • Adapting assessment
  • Assistive technology: tools for learning

Pre-Requisites

  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior.
  • Completion of AQ Special Education, Part 1
  • Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer*, confirming one year of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification. *The Ontario College of Teachers defines “supervisory official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. (A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity). For a teacher employed by a private school, the “supervisory official” is the Ministry of Education official (e.g. Education Officer) appointed to provide supervisory services to the school.
