This course will introduce students to the formal and aesthetic principles of cinema, cultivating students’ literacy in both media form and cultural representation. Many of us watch some variation of film and television each day.
Though we may not realize it, the representations we see on screen can have a profound effect on how we understand social categories such as gender, class, race, sexuality, and national identity.
In this course, students will gain fluency in the audio-visual language that comprises visual media and the complex ways in which that language creates cultural meaning.
The comprehensive arts curriculum at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television gives motivated students the means to challenge the constructs around them as multifaceted artists and scholars, filled with the knowledge, insight and point of view to create meaningful experiences pointing toward a better world.
In this class, students will learn how screenplays are written, then get some practice in writing them. You’ll have a chance to write “minute movies” (just a page long), short screenplays (a few pages long), and scenes from full length movies.
The Filmmaking Camp is perfect for those who are interested in learning more about the behind the scenes TV/Movie making process! Students will be on set on Dallas Young Actors Studio's summer production camps where they will learn about cinematography.
Bring in an exposed roll of black and white film and we'll walk you through the process showing you step-by-step how to develop. Continue your journey in analog photography by following up with our B&W Darkroom Printing Workshop and make a print directly from your negatives.
This workshop will explore film and camera types and formats; shooting with film cameras and developing your own film.
Teachers aren’t the only adults who can benefit from working together in this method! Adults of all levels of experience can explore this wonderful filmmaking process in workshops that result in share-able animated shorts.
