All responsible companies are now providing their staff with basic asbestos awareness training to minimise the health risk to their people.

Anyone who might enter an area containing asbestos, or who might come into contact with asbestos containing materials, should complete an approved asbestos awareness training course with further training required for anyone required to remove or handle asbestos.

Course overview

Here’s what we’ll be covering in each lesson of the Asbestos Awareness course.

On average each lesson is approximately 5 minutes long, making it easy to quickly make fantastic progress, even if you only have a small amount of time each day.

Lesson 01 - Properties of Asbestos

• The course kicks of with an introduction to asbestos and why it was used as a material in the first place
• Another key thing you’ll examine in lesson 1 is the 3 common types
• You’ll look at where these types can be found
• And the last important thing, the extent to which each type was used

Lesson 02 - Reasons for Asbestos Use

• Lesson 2 begins with a look at the vast amount of products that contained asbestos
• It will then take a look at the different industries that used it extensively
• This lesson will round up with a look at when each type was banned and what that means for the products that still contain it today

Lesson 03 - The Risks & Effects on Health

• Lesson 3 begins by looking at the risk to your health and how that risk increases
• You’ll learn about the different diseases resulting from asbestos exposure and who is at greater risk
• And lastly you’ll look at the statistics of asbestos related deaths and diseases

Lesson 04 - Where Asbestos & ACMs can be Found

• Lesson 4 begins with an exploration of a building and the ACMs that may be within it
• You’ll have the opportunity to view photographs of ACMs and find out more detail of how they were used and where you’re likely to find them in buildings now

Lesson 05 - Avoiding the Risks of Asbestos

• Lesson 5 demonstrates ways that you can avoid the risks
• You’ll learn about asbestos friability and the hierarchy of fibre release
• And lastly what to do if you are ever unsure

Lesson 06 - Asbestos Register & Emergency Procedures

• Lesson 6 begins with an explanation of what the asbestos register does, and importantly, does not tell you
• It goes on to advise on what to do in the event of exposure to asbestos

Lesson 07 - Outline of Legislation Relating to Asbestos

• Lesson 7 begins with a look at Regulation 5 of CAR 2012
• And goes on to look at the CDM 2015 regulations
• And finishes with Regulation 6 of CAR 2012
