Asbestos is a highly toxic material that is carconogenic. It is commonly found in buildings, homes and other locations right across Australia.
There is an extensive range of materials that contain asbestos; even though Australia totally banned it in 2003. Internationally there are estimated to be over 100,000 deaths per year from asbestos exposure.
In Australia approximately 600 deaths a year occur from mesothelioma with an additional 125 asbestosis-related deaths. Further asbestos-related deaths occur from lung cancer. These are hard to seperate in statistics, as lung cancer is common with other causes.
