When asbestos fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases which are responsible for around 4000 deaths a year. There are three main diseases caused by asbestos: mesothelioma (which is always fatal), lung cancer (almost always fatal) and asbestosis (not always fatal, but it can be very debilitating).

This course is now a legal requirement for anyone in a trade or industry whose work may involve the risk of contact with asbestos containing materials. The main groups of workers deemed to be at risk from asbestos exposure and therefore requiring asbestos awareness training are as follows:

  • General maintenance staff

  • Electricians, Plumbers & Gas Fitters

  • Painters & Decorators

  • Construction & Demolition Workers

  • Joiners & Plasterers

  • Computer & Telecommunication Engineers

  • Heating & Ventilation Engineers

Our Asbestos Awareness Training covers the following topics:

  • The properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including its interaction with smoking,

  • The types of products or materials likely to contain asbestos

  • The operations which could result in asbestos exposure and the importance of preventive controls to minimise exposure,

  • Managers Responsibilities (how to protect workers and avoid a prosecution)

  • Role of Asbestos Surveys and how to understand what is in them (with practical demonstration)

  • Safe work practices, control measures, and protective equipment, (what you can do, what you can?t do)

  • The purpose, choice, limitations, proper use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment,

  • The general procedures to be followed when dealing with an emergency in the event of the uncontrolled release of asbestos dust in the workplace
