DurationThe ZAP in schools workshops last 90 minutes. They are classroom-based and involve a mixture of activities, role-play and discussion. They are delivered by fully trained Kidscape staff and volunteers, all of whom are DBS checked.
ZAP in Schools workshops equip children and young people in Years 5-8 with the skills they need to both recognise and positively respond to bullying behaviour.
The 90-minute workshop explores the differences between teasing and bullying and the role of the bystander. Children will lean skills and techniques (known as the Kidscape ZAP tools) that can be confidently used in a potential bullying situation.

Bullying is devastating for young lives. Anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation are common amongst children who experience bullying, and the negative effects can be felt long into adult life, affecting academic achievement, relationships and long term mental and physical health.
Bullying behaviour can happen face to face or online, in school or the wider community. It can be verbal, physical or emotional and often has a disproportionate impact on children who are perceived as 'different' by others. This includes children from some minority or faith groups, disabled children and those with additional needs, young carers, young people who identify or are perceived to identify as LGBT+, children in care, children with illness and children living in poverty. Children have a legal right to be protected from all forms of bullying, harassment and harm.
Kidscape gives hope and help to thousands of children and families each year and work in communities throughout England and Wales to help keep children safe.
Our approach
Bullying is a complex issue which requires a multi-faceted response. There are many factors that influence behaviour – in our schools, our communities and online. We benefit from a wealth of research both in the UK and internationally relating to bullying, and we are influenced by a broad range of theoretical approaches.
Direct interventions with children and families We provide interventions with children at an individual and peer group level and family-based interventions.
Work with schools and the community We support staff to understand how their actions influence the behaviour of children and consider practical ways we can build safe communities.
Wider societal influence We consider the ways that our society and culture influence the behaviour of children and are champions for kindness, empathy, inclusion and respect.
You will learn about four classic behaviour types that we come across every day, and what they look like. Knowing about these is enormously empowering because it helps to give you a sense of assertiveness being a choice, rather than a gift that you have if you are lucky.
This practical course will equip you with the skills to be assertive in a range of work situations. You will learn how to use different behaviours and techniques to deal with key stakeholders with assertion and confidence.
North Kent Training Service offers training for organisations across all sectors and individual learners in Kent, Medway and the South East. Courses include First Aid, Food Safety, Health and Safety and Business skills such as Time Management, Communication Skills and Management.
During this course, you will learn and understand when to be assertive in appropriate situations. You will explore when assertive behaviour is appropriate and the positive and negative effects of these behaviours.
It made me think that assertiveness means different things to different people. For me it simply means achieving that balance of articulating clearly and concisely what we need or want whilst being mindful of the needs and wants of others.
