Assertiveness Skills

This course provides the practical skills to improve confidence and effectiveness when dealing with others.

As a result of attending this course, you will learn how to:

  • express yourself more confidently

  • exercise more control in difficult situations

  • deal with “difficult” people, more effectively

  • encourage others to behave more assertively towards you

  • say no, ask for help, give and receive feedback effectively and confidently

At the end of the course you will develop your own ‘Genuine Assertiveness’ action plan.

Programme

Session 1: What Are Good Interpersonal Skills and How Do We Define Them? – What are the barriers to Interpersonal Communication.

Session 2: Taking Responsibility for Our Behaviour – With tutor input and group discussion, the course focuses on behaviour being a variable rather than a constant.

Session 3: Choosing and Making the Approach

  • the importance of anticipating reactions and choosing the appropriate strategy

  • understanding objections

  • laying foundations for agreement

  • group discussion

Session 4: What is Assertiveness? – Developing an Assertive Style

Session 5: The Assertive Techniques

For example:

  • basic assertion

  • broken record

  • fogging

  • negative feelings assertion

  • workable solution

  • discrepancy assertion

Session 6: The Importance of Body Language

  • how to use it

  • how to recognise it in others

Session 7: Short video ‘Say What You Want’ – Followed by discussion.

Session 8: Let’s Be Practical

Where do we go from here? What have we learned and what can we do with it?
Course members will be asked to commit themselves to the practical actions they will take as a result of attending the course.
