About This Course
The AET award is an introductory teaching and training qualification. The course content covers the fundamentals of teaching, learning and assessment theory and practice, equipping you with the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare, deliver and evaluate basic teaching and learning sessions, in a variety of teaching or training contexts.
The course is pre-service, i.e. there is no expectation for you to have access to teaching hours. It is aimed at developing the fundamental knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary and on successful completion, you will achieve a nationally-recognised qualification.
The award is suitable for new teachers working in other sectors including Adult and Community Education, trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14-19 year olds in a vocational setting.
It will enable you to become an effective, critical and professional teacher or trainer with well developed knowledge, skills and understanding of your role and the sector you are operating within.
The course consists of three units with a total number of 12 credits:
Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training
Understanding Assessment in Education and Training.
Entry Requirements
You will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of written English. Normally, this will be GCSE English at Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent.
If you do not hold this qualification, you may still take the course, but will be expected to work towards GCSE English (and Maths) in order to progress to a career in teaching.
Additionally, you will need to have IT skills to word process assignments and prepare teaching materials.
Assessment Method
You will be assessed through reflections on your own and others’ teaching practice, a micro-teach, academic essays, presentations and through a Reflective Journal.
Progression Opportunities
The Award in Education and Training provides crucial education for aspiring teachers, trainers and offers a springboard for working towards a full teaching qualification. You may have an opportunity to progress to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training that is also delivered at West London College.
The course may also lead to employment in teaching/training or to increased responsibility and promotion within your current role.
Study Methods
The course will be blended, i.e. delivered both face-to-face and online. You will be able to attend Hammersmith & Fulham College, or access online (only 3 practical sessions will need to be attended in-person). One-to-one tutorials will also be available, if required.
