Kolej Poly-Tech MARA (KPTM) which was originally known as Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (KYPM) was founded as a private higher education institute under the Private Higher Education Institute Act 1996 (Act 555) in September 2003.
Now Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Sdn. Bhd (KPTM) is an educational institution wholly owned by MARA Corporation Sdn Bhd (MARA Corp) that offers 45 study programs at the foundation, diploma, degree, post-graduate and professional study levels. KPTM operates in 7 branches including one of University College level which is Kuala Lumpur Poly-Tech MARA University College.
KPTM offers various educational opportunities in fields such as Information Technology, Computer Science, Health Science, Social Science, Accounting, Business Management, Engineering, Humanities and Bio-Industry.
Starting in January 1983, a Learning Resource Center was established in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. In June 1983, MARA Science College (formerly known as MARA Community College) was established in Kuantan, Pahang by offering a twin program known as the American Associate Degree (AAD). This program has been well received by more than 75 universities in the United States and New Zealand as a 2+2 transfer degree program.
This extraordinary achievement later led to the establishment of KPTM Kuala Lumpur (1987), KPTM Bangi (1988) and KPTM Kota Bharu (1994). Several international strategic alliances were formed with the United Kingdom's Northern Consortium (1988), the Australian Higher Education Consortium in Malaysia (1994) and the British Higher Education Consortium in Malaysia (1994) which enabled students to continue their studies at several renowned UK and Australian universities.
In 1993, a joint venture was signed with Dublin Business School (DBS) , Ireland to make the Professional Accounting Program (ACCA) successful which was then followed up with another joint venture with Coventry University, United Kingdom in 2004 which has led to an initiative to produce graduates the world.

KPTM has also established collaborations with local public and private universities such as Universiti Teknologi MARA (1994), Universiti Putra Malaysia (1995), Universiti Malaya (1995), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (1996), Universiti Sains Malaysia (1996), Universiti Multimedia (1998) ), Universiti Utara Malaysia and Matriculation Center, Ministry of Education Malaysia (1999).
The collaboration established with Dublin Business School (DBS) , Ireland in October 2014 to operate the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Accounting and Finance program is another bold step taken by MARA Poly-Tech College (KPTM) to internationalize the academic structure of its program will benefit the students in the long run.
KPTM's existing strength was built through an excellent record with the merger of 2 leading MARA institutions, namely Kolej Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (KYPM) and Infotech Academy MARA (AIM).
KPTM has grown since its establishment as one of the largest Bumiputera private higher education institutes in Malaysia with more than 18,000 full-time students on seven campuses; Kuala Lumpur, Bangi, Kota Bharu, Kuantan, Batu Pahat, Ipoh and Alor Setar. To date, KPTM has produced a total of 62,000 graduates since its official establishment in 2003.
Kuala Lumpur Poly-Tech College (KPTM KL) was upgraded as a university college by the Ministry of Higher Education on 15 October 2015. KPTM KL is now officially known as Kuala Lumpur Poly-Tech University College (KUPTM).
