Overview

  • Huge increases in the volume of data have led to a growing demand for professionals who can design, organise, manage and manipulate databases. These professionals also need the ability to analyse and extract useful and practical insights and then communicate these findings to a range of audiences.
  • Designed for students who wish to develop strong and rigorous mathematical, statistical and computing skills, the degree involves the development of good communication and consulting skills, providing a holistic education.
  • You will study a range of subjects in big data mining and management, database systems, sample survey and experimental designs, linear algebra, statistical models and time series analysis, data analytics and visualisation. This degree includes industry guest lectures and industry-inspired projects that involve a series of related analyses.
  • Additionally, students will complete a Professional Practice subject involving an industry relevant project to develop their skills in identifying problems, selecting relevant techniques, communicating effectively and managing projects.
  • A Data Science and Analytics (Honours) degree is available to high performing students who have completed the three-year Bachelor of Data Science and Analytics degree.
  • There are opportunities for scholarships from corporate partners, plus summer scholarships and undergraduate research projects with academic staff. You will have access to programs offered by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) ACE Network.

Higher Education Study

  • For your application to be assessed on your university results you need to have completed at least half a year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at a Bachelor's degree level or higher. Applicants must have previously studied in the areas of Natural and Physical Sciences, or Information Technology or Engineering. Your grades will be converted to a selection rank to be used for admission purposes. Students may also be eligible for credit for prior learning.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

  • Applicants who have completed a minimum of an AQF Certificate IV will be considered for admission to this degree. Applicants must have previously studied in the areas of Natural and Physical Sciences, or Information Technology or Engineering. Your grades will be converted to a selection rank, in order for UOW to assess whether you meet the minimum ATAR-SR (which is stated above).

Work and life experience

  • Admission to UOW is primarily based on your academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered. If you do not meet the academic requirements for this course, we recommend exploring recognized pathway programs, such as those offered by UOW College or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).
