In this data science degree, you'll learn to use specialised computational and statistical techniques to analyse big data and generate insights to tackle complex problems. These are pivotal skills for the 21st century, designed to meet the strong demand for data science professionals. 

With industry-focused practices, real-world datasets, and hands-on tools, you will develop an in-depth understanding of deep learning, data management, data mining, and decision making. Throughout your study, you will learn how to wrangle, analyse, visualise, predict, and find insights into data to solve a host of real-world problems.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand and apply a broad and coherent body of data science in a wide range of applications from the following areas: data modelling, data exploration, machine learning, data visualisation, business analytics, predictive analytics, data analytics for cybersecurity, IT profession and ethics, text mining and NLP;
  • Analyse and adapt the latest data science technologies with intellectual independence, self- learning capabilities and creativity to identify and solve real-world problems with sound decisions and judgement in a broad range of sectors including ICT, government, banking and finance, retail, education, health, social network and marketing;
  • Exhibit a range of technical, analytical, managerial, leadership and interpersonal skills; in depth understanding to the codes of ethics and conducts of data science professions; and
  • Exhibit a capacity to undertake IT design and development practice in an independent or collaborative environment with a strong industry focus; and the responsibility and accountability as a lifelong learner for their own learning and professional practice.

First-hand industry experience while you study

  • Our Bachelor of Data Science fosters a culture of practical experience through summer internships and final-year projects. 

Summer internships

  • Each year, 50 students within the IT program will be offered paid summer internships, in collaboration with the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industries (VCCI) and SMEs. 
  • The program has also established fractional FTE opportunities across various industry partners, such as Western Health (WH), VU ITS, and Her Creation Squad, among others. 
  • Each internship is guided by a supervisor from the IT program and a mentor from the industry, ensuring a seamless and professional learning experience through these placements.

Final-year projects

  • Students leverage their data analysis and data management skills to devise real-world solutions through a final year applied Project units NEF3001 and NEF3002. 
  • These units address industry-based learning of professional practices, on-campus WIL, and case studies. 

Most projects are sourced from industry partners who play the role of clients, while supervisors assume the role of project managers. Recent industry partners for these projects include:
