Course Details

As a mechanical engineer, you might design automatic control systems or take charge of the operation of a smart building. You could manage the water supply for a whole state and design wind turbines or highly efficient, low-cost products for the developing world.

In the diverse and challenging field of mechanical engineering, your role as a mechanical engineer could take you into various industries. You might be called on to work with the medical profession to create robots that can operate with greater precision than a human, or be at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing using 3D printers to create aircraft parts with elegance and function.

Growth industries include advanced manufacturing, smart buildings, renewable energy, medical engineering, and consulting practice, where mechanical engineers play pivotal roles.

Mechanical engineering is about the efficient use of energy in the design and function of all types of mechanisms, from the simplest to the most complex. It builds on engineering principles of physics, chemistry, materials, mathematics and biology to achieve engineering goals.

Intakes

  • February, July and October

In the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) program, the common first year lays a foundation in the basic sciences of mathematics, physics and chemistry and introduces the disciplines available to you for further studies. You'll learn to apply your developing math and science knowledge to real-life engineering problems and begin to understand the interaction between engineering and society.

When your mechanical engineering specialisation begins at level two of the course, it focuses on engineering practice and the engineering sciences. At level three, your studies are extended to a professional level and you're encouraged to learn independently by using the wide range of learning resources available to you.

At level four, you'll undertake an independent full-year project in an area of personal interest. The results of this project are presented and examined by thesis. In addition, you'll complete core units including professional practice, an integrated design project unit plus four engineering units offering a scope for specialisation.

Quality education

  • Monash University is ranked #63 in the world for mechanical engineering (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024) and rated Tier 5 (Excellent) in D-Setara Engineering by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.

Professional recognition

  • The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours) degree is accredited by Engineers Australia and the Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia. It is also recognised by the Washington Accord, which means that our mechanical engineering graduates can work in any other signatory country without the need to requalify.

The common first year

  • The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) has a common first year, allowing you to experience a range of disciplines before deciding on a specialisation. You'll develop your foundational skills for engineering before deciding which of the six specialisations to pursue in your second year.

Participate in design competitions

  • Engineering competitions are great opportunities to hone your skills, gain real-world exposure, and may well be a stepping stone to greater things. Our students have participated in numerous challenges, most notably Shell Eco-marathon Asia, Thailand SAE Auto Challenge-Student Formula, and Warman Design and Build Competition in Sydney, Australia.

An industry-focused course

  • Choose from locally developed elective units that are aligned with current industry needs, such as reliability engineering, non-destructive testing, engineering acoustics, biomedical engineering and healthcare system, clean energy materials, and more. You'll also be better prepared for the workplace with industry-based final-year projects.

Take it to the next level

  • Challenge yourself with master's-level elective units in the area of applied mechanical engineering courses, including energy and sustainability.

Gain work experience

  • Work experience amplifies your learning and hones your hands-on skills. As part of your course, you'll complete a 12-week work placement after your third year. Our students have interned with companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell, Gamuda, IBM and more.

Kick-start your professional development

  • The Student Leaders Network program allows you to engage with industry professionals through workshops, industry site visits, networking evenings, and a leadership summit over the course of a year. You'll develop critical leadership, teamwork and communication skills.

Join an engineering student club

  • Our student-run clubs lets you learn new skills and engage with industry to broaden your networks. You’ll get hands-on with real-world projects and competitions as you work in multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative products or drive positive change.

Try your hand at research

  • Apply for the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program to experience a genuine research environment. You’ll learn from leading researchers and acquire knowledge and skills to prepare you for your final year project and higher degree studies.

As a mechanical engineer, you'll be able to deploy your skills in a wide range of industries, including:

  • Mechanical and electrical consultancy
  • Research and development
  • Automotive industry
  • Sustainable technologies
  • Design and manufacturing
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Project management
  • Renewable energy and power plant operations.
