Basic First Aid

Overview

Every year, around 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have given them a chance to live. As such, first aid training can be instrumental in saving lives in the event of an injury or a sudden illness. 

Companies need to engage workers on health and safety matters that will directly affect them. According to WorkSafe NZ, all workers must be provided with first aid facilities, equipment and access to first aiders. You may also be interested in.

Successful Learners Will Receive

• NZQA Unit Standard 6401, Level 2, Credit 1 – Provide first aid
• NZQA Unit Standard 6402, Level 1, Credit 1 – Basic Life Support

Topics Covered

The participant is expected to assess and manage a person’s condition according to accepted practices for first aid, including shock and bleeding, trauma from burns, fractures, soft tissue injuries, or poisonings, and medical conditions ranging from heart attack, asthma, stroke, seizure, or diabetes.

They are also expected to develop the ability to provide basic life support through CPR and management of a foreign body airway obstruction (choking).

Finally, this will help first aiders establish a set of considerations when deciding what first aid equipment and facilities are needed at work so that they can suggest ways to help organise first aid kits and facilities.

This Workplace First Aid program incorporates adult, child, and infant emergency care and is designed to train layperson rescuers for:

• CPR administration for children, infants, and adults
• AED use for children and adults.
• First aid for possible workplace incidents.
• First aid for common injuries.

Upon successful completion of the course, graduates may:

• Recognize and evaluate an emergency and a victim
• Know how to activate or alert the emergency medical services (EMS)
• Be able to provide 1-person infant, child, and adult CPR to a non-breathing or injured person and administer the proper first aid.
• Properly use an automated external defibrillator (AED)

To participate, you must have the minimum age 14. There are two components to your training in order to receive your certification. The first part is all about theory and the second one covers practical skills. You must pass both your theory and practical training and work with an instructor in a classroom setting.
