Certification

Basic Crew Standard or Basic Cruising Standard? The course content is the same for both Crew and Cruising standards. For the Basic Crew Standard you need to be able to assist a skipper as a competent crew member.

For the Basic Cruising Standard level a higher standard of proficiency is required to act as skipper and be fully responsible for the vessel and crew.I have little or no sailing experience

Choose the Basic Crew Standard. That takes the pressure off so you can enjoy learning new skills without fearing you have to be in charge of a boat and a crew.
With the Basic Crew certification, you can take skill development clinics.

After some sailing practice, take the Basic Cruising Checkout to get your Basic Cruising Standard for skippers.I have some sailing experience.Perhaps you have sailed before or taken a Sail Canada dinghy sailing course.

To be awarded the Basic Cruising Standard,  you will demonstrate the ability to be in charge of the boat and crew, acting as skipper through all maneuvers. Previous experience of at least three days on a similar boat and familiarity with tacking, gybing, points of sail.
