Sewing 101 is our foundation class, exploring the basics of sewing while learning to make a simple A-line skirt with elastic casing and little projects like bows and emoji pillows. The skills you learn thru these projects will help you with sewing simple curtains and pillows too!
We start with learning how to use a sewing machine. How to operate it and properly thread it, all about pressing, seam allowances, pinning, using patterns, layout and cutting, a bit about measurements and the importance of fabric grainlines that are crucial for your sewing success.
We have Brother sewing machines to use in class and you are welcomed to bring your own as long as it is in good working order.
Our mission is to inspire and guide our Future Fashion Designers. Our Founder, Hollywood costume designer Shawnelle Cherry, has always had a desire to teach others to sew and share her passion for fashion.
You will learn basic threading, bobbin winding, settings for all stitch functions, stitch variations, use of the included accessory feet and how to make a buttonhole. We will also show you basic machine maintenance. Machine usage classes are on-going.
In this one-hour class, students will learn how to use a sewing machine and get some practice time to explore the different features. They’ll become familiar with the different parts of the sewing machine, learn how to thread the machine and the bobbin, and do some stitching on scrap fabric.
Adult classes are sold in 6 week blocks and are 2 hours per week for 6 weeks (total of 12 hours of class time). Fabric charges are not included with the price of a membership. Fabric must be pre-washed and put Into a plastic zip lock bag.
Sewing techniques include: installing zippers, hemming pants, pockets, Hong Kong seams, how to sew a sleeve (set a sleeve) using different textiles, and much more!
Would you like help making a particular pattern or project? This is an open studio class where you can bring in ANY project. Sew at your leisure with assistance from our Studio Educator.
