Over the course of the series, complete three projects that teach professional sewing techniques like sewing straight lines WITHOUT pins and other basics including winding a bobbin, threading a sewing machine, reading patterns and cutting fabric on the grain.
Each 4-week level is designed to teach you in a fun and relaxed environment. Sign up for the classes one 4-week level at a time or sign up for the whole 12-week beginning sewing course for a discount.
Beginning Sewing Level 1: Make an apron as you build your sewing skills. Sew basic stitches; practice and apply basic techniques; and learn to read patterns.
Beginning Sewing Level 2 (Prereq: Beginning 1 or private lessons): Improve on the skills you have by sewing a robe with sleeves, band, pockets and sash. Work with large volumes of fabric, tricky layouts, and learn the proper way to make a faced front.
Beginning Sewing Level 3 (Prereq: Beginning 2): Ready to make comfy pjs? Sew buttons and buttonholes with your machine. Find out the secrets of interfacing. Sew a professional pocket and collar.

Portland Fashion Institute was founded in 2002 as Portland Sewing with a beginning sewing class for just four students. Now, PFI offers beginner, intermediate and advanced sewing classes as well as three certificate programs in apparel business.
PFI graduates have gone on to do beautiful things. They hold executive positions at apparel manufacturers, compete (and win) at the highest level, and run their own thriving businesses. They fuel the fashion industry in Portland and around the world.
PFI courses can help you become industry proficient in clothing design, patternmaking, construction, manufacturing and production. All of our teachers work in apparel and are well-versed in current techniques. We are apparel people teaching apparel people. We welcome you to join us!

Learn to thread and use the sewing machine. Have a great introduction to sewing processes as you pin, cut, iron, and sew practical projects with straight seams and seam finishes.
Our various beginner sewing classes feature a wide variety of patterns to choose from!
Students will learn an extensive range of hand stitches, how to shape a garment foundation, design and tailor a variety of pocket styles, design and shape lapels and collars, and how to set structured roped sleeves.
In the heart of NOVA, the Finishing School has gained a reputation for providing an outstanding place for learning homemaking skills. Many children have been privileged to receive instruction at The Finishing School, specifically located in Falls Church, Virginia.
