When youth participate in boxing, it’s a metaphor for life. The same skills youth need in the ring are the skills they need to succeed as adults—iin work, family, and community. Discipline. Commitment. Confidence. Self-esteem. Balance. Harmony. Awareness. Authenticity. Mutual respect.
Boxing is not about violence. It’s about building strength inside and out. It’s about preparing to do your best in and out of the ring. After working out and training at NOMIS, young people are better prepared to overcome obstacles, find their place in the world, and achieve their goals in life.
The Olympic-style boxing training program includes exercise and conditioning, health and wellness training, and counseling and sport mentoring from experienced coaches. Participants are encouraged to commit to six hours of training per week.
The Boxing Academy’s goal is to give youth opportunities, support, and services to succeed—nnot just in the ring but in life. Participants will develop a healthy lifestyle, build character and resilience, grow into responsible adults, and live free from violence, gang activity, and risky behavior.
The Elite Boxing Team includes youth who have mastered the fundamentals of Olympic-style boxing. Members train to compete in USA Boxing-sanctioned events locally, regionally, and nationally. They are held to high standards of accountability for training days, weight management, conditioning (running and road work), and sparring.
Several team members in 2021 participated in boxing events, including the National Golden Gloves boxing tournament, the Washington D.C. Golden Gloves tournament, and the USA Boxing national championships. NOMIS fully funds participants, if needed, including gear, travel, and registration fees.
The youth who participate in the NOMIS Youth Network have learned to trust the facility and the coaches. This trust is hard-won and not taken lightly by the adults. Youth have grown to see the facility as a safe space where they can:
Participate in structured team-building activities
Workout with weights or on the treadmill
Enjoy a sense of security and belonging
Socialize with their peers
Enjoy healthy snacks and beverages
