Top Benefits of Boxing
Boxing as a sport requires a high level of athletic prowess: strength, speed, agility, hand-eye coordination, endurance, nerve, and power, just to name several required attributes. Boxing as a fitness activity enables the average person to hone those same athletic skills, all without having to take a punch.
All that punching, kicking, and jumping requires a surprising amount of strength. During a boxing workout, you may punch or kick a bag hundreds of times, requiring your upper body, lower body, and core to engage as you make contact with your sparing partners or our training bags.
Boxing also improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Individuals with good hand-eye coordination tend to have faster reflexes and reaction times and tend to have better physical coordination as a whole.
Boxing can help hone hand-eye coordination. When you’re tasked with punching a speed bag (a lightweight boxing bag suspended from a disc that turns and bounces quickly with each punch) or you’re paired up to spar with a partner (practice punching your partner’s padded mitts), you must be able to see the target, react to the target, and hit the target, all while the target is moving and changing position. It’s tough, but with practice, your hand-eye coordination improves substantially.
Boxing is an incredible mechanism for improved body composition because it perfectly combines muscle-building strength training moves and calorie-torching bouts of cardio.
By regularly participating in a boxing program and following a nutritious eating plan, there’s no reason you won’t see changes in your shape and improvements to your fat mass percentage. And if you’re hoping for a pat on the back from your bathroom scale, you’re likely to see changes in your weight as well.
Boxing is also a great outlet for stress. It focuses the mind on the body rather than the difficulties of the day. There’s also an incredibly cathartic release when you get to take some of your stress out on a punching bag. It’s an empowering feeling to punch your stress to smithereens.
At Zone Martial Arts, we teach a mixture of mixed martial arts consisting of Taekwondo, American Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Krav Maga.
Our instructors, led by world champion Taekwondo Master Erik Ekholm, teach old and young how to protect themselves and be confident in an uncertain world. At Zone Martial Arts, we teach life lessons, goal setting, respect, and, above all, self-defense and the confidence to stand up for yourself.
Master Ekholm’s martial arts training started in 1977 in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 12. He was immediately hooked; the structure and discipline, which was taught in a fun and challenging manner, developed his deep passion for the martial arts.
Among his many accolades, in 1982, Master Ekholm won the U.S Open and the Battle of Atlanta in the Men’s super-lightweight division. In 1989, he took the Gold Medal at the National Collegiate Championships in Olympic Taekwondo. In 1994, Master Ekhom won the World Championship.
While serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Ord, California, Master Ekholm furthered his skills in hand-to-hand combat, learning Krav Maga and other disciplines that later became the building blocks of his first school in San Jose, California. After establishing three martial arts schools in California, Master Ekholm transitioned leadership to his brother and business partners. He married his wife, Melanie, and moved back to Jacksonville, establishing Zone Martial Arts here in Duval County.
During his 45+ years learning and teaching mixed martial arts, Master Ekholm has helped thousands of students reach their martial arts and fitness goals. His passion is helping people benefit from the martial arts while learning life skills and character traits to enrich their lives. He is passionate about teaching kids and adults and is ready to help you reach your goal.
