Description
This unit of competency MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus as a standalone unit. This unit of competency is targeted to those workers who as part of their activities require breathing apparatus because of uncontrolled hazardous gases/vapours in confined spaces, are required to enter and working in a confined space with an oxygen deficient atmosphere and require breathing apparatus.
Purpose
Participants will be motivated by this course and be equipped with skills and knowledge to undertake many facets of breathing apparatus.
As a result of this program, participants will be able to:
Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus.
Operate breathing apparatus.
Close down breathing apparatus set in accordance with procedures.
Remove breathing apparatus set in accordance with procedures.
Undertake after-use cleaning and maintenance of breathing apparatus.
Make equipment ready for next operational use.
Entry requirements
There are no specified entry requirements for this training program.
It is acknowledged that many candidates will have vocational experience that will have provided suitable preparation for the program.
It is usually the case that personnel entering this program are identified by their employer based on their need for professional development and growth.
Assessment requirement
Written Theory Assessment
The candidate will be required to satisfactorily complete theory assessment comprising 30 multiple-choice questions. These will be marked on the spot in order to provide the candidate with immediate feedback and to allow them to identify areas for further development.
Practical Assessment
The candidate will be required to demonstrate their practical skills set integrated with their knowledge during practical assessment activities. These activities are sourced from varying equipment inspection, pre-operational site checks, equipment donning and doffing and also fault finding and reporting. Trainers will regularly challenge test candidates throughout the course on varying equipment and mark their practical checklist accordingly.
Qualification
This unit of competence has been drawn from the nationally endorsed industry training package MSM Manufacturing Training package (Release 6.0). On successfully completing the training and assessment, a Statement of Achievement for the unit MSMWHS216 – Operate breathing apparatus will be issued.

Materials or equipment required
Clients must wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear for the practical component of the training.
Where a client does not wear covered shoes or work boots and work wear they may not be able to participate in the practical component due to work health and safety concerns.

This course is the initial training for enter & work in confined spaces, the course is suited for a person that has no experience with working in confined spaces & has never held a statement of attainment for entre & work in confined spaces.
The units of competency which make up the 4-Day Confined Space Rescue Training Course can be applied towards RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue.
