Course Details

This course provides training in the safe operation and maintenance of breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere as defined by AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.

  • This course is nationally recognised (accredited).
  • Participants who successfully complete all requirements will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus and competency card.
  • Upon successful completion of all course requirements, participants will be able to:
  • Identify and understand the relevant workplace health and safety legislation, standards and codes of practice.
  • Identify the hazards related to operating the breathing apparatus, assess the risks and put effective hazard prevention or control measures into place.
  • Conduct pre-donning tests and correctly don and operate the breathing apparatus.
  • Identify and use appropriate communication methods.
  • Determine the available working time from a breathing apparatus set.
  • Correctly close down, remove and clean breathing apparatus.
  • Report faults/damage to the breathing apparatus.
  • Understand the effects of irrespirable atmospheres on the body and the need for protective equipment.
  • Characteristics, component parts, operation of compressed air breathing apparatus.
