Overview
At this level candidates are likely to have settled on a chosen trade, and may also be gaining some experience in the workplace in order to develop skills and knowledge to become employable in this area.
They are becoming skilled in the use of the wider range of tools including power tools and have a growing understanding of materials and the importance of housekeeping.
They are taking more responsibility for carrying out well defined tasks, making choices about the methods that are appropriate and dealing with straight forward problems.
Entry Requirements
3 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above to include English and maths. Students who do not meet the entry requirements will be given consideration for a relevant vocational qualification.
If you are under 19 and you do not already have English & Maths GCSE grades 4-9 or equivalent you will be required to undertake GCSE or Functional Skills alongside your main qualification.
Assessment Types
Your progress is assessed throughout the year. You will develop a variety of construction skills which will be tested by practical demonstration of your competence throughout the course.
You will also undertake theory exams.
Units/Modules
You will learn by a series of extended practical exercises in well-equipped workshops backed up by relevant classroom theory. This includes learning all aspects of basic brickwork including mixing mortar, cutting components and laying bricks and blocks.

Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication
Interpreting working drawings to set out masonry structures
Producing thin joint masonry and masonry cladding
Construct solid walling, isolated and attached piers
Construct cavity walling forms masonry structures
Benefits/Skills
The Level 2 programme provides a major input to a framework for an apprenticeship. Throughout the course you will develop the skills and knowledge needed to become a competent and qualified Bricklayer.
Careers/Progression
You can progress to a bricklaying Level 3 qualification at Keighley College, or to a Brickwork Apprenticeship.

Sporting activities
The College runs a number of sporting activities including table tennis, zumba and football. New activities are introduced throughout the year and are publicised around the college.

Fundraising
Each year the College run a number of fundraising activities which support both local and national charities. Whilst all students are encouraged to join in activities, Fundraising forms part of Level 1 study programme.

Volunteering
The College actively encourages students to participate in volunteering opportunities. It is recognised volunteering offers students the opportunity to meet new people, have fun and develop essential employability skills.
Examples of volunteering students have participated in are marshalling at sports events, working in a charity shop, supporting at a youth club and running community events.
This course is perfect if you have no previous construction knowledge and you want to find out what’s involved in the industry.
Our Bricklaying courses are designed to develop your essential bricklaying skills and knowledge, enabling you to work in the industry as a trainee bricklayer.
The range of sites and projects that bricklayers will work on include large commercial developments, new builds in housing, alterations, extensions and restorations.
You will learn how to use the tools of the trade, how to work safely and make sure others are safe at the same time. This introductory course will help you to learn about these skills as well as the principles of building, block laying and how to do it.
This short introductory course is ideal for those of you who want to gain some basic bricklaying skills. Those who complete the course will be provided with an Able Skills certificate, assured by City & Guilds.
