Course Details

Learners who wish to understand more about the role of the childcare practitioner in both an early years setting and a primary school would benefit from this new course.

Overview

The objective of this qualification is to support learners as they develop their knowledge, understanding and skills when caring for and supporting the learning and development of children aged 0–11 years & 11 months.

Classroom and workplace based, learners will benefit from theoretical knowledge as well as learning practical skills to help them put that knowledge into practice.

Entry Requirements

Learners must have 5 GCSE’s at Grade D/3 or above and a genuine interest in working with children and young people.

Assessment Types

Internal assessment approach: work-based portfolio of evidence arranged to reflect application of theoretical knowledge in practice with clear expectations of engagement with statutory frameworks.

Units/Modules

All units for this qualification will be internally assessed using a portfolio of evidence.

Learners will also be required to complete a Professional Skills Record in both an early years and a primary school setting.

  • Child development from birth to 11 years & 11 months

  • Play and learning

  • Exploring legislation

  • The role of the childcare practitioner

  • Nutrition

  • Physical development and physical activity

Benefits/Skills

Learners will develop and use skills of leadership, mentoring, coaching and reflection as they complete the qualification through work-based learning opportunities.

Maths and English will also be embedded.

Careers/Progression

This qualification is designed as entry to the workforce at Level 2 and may support progression into a range of job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors.

Although the qualification will not be eligible for UCAS points, it could provide evidence for a personal statement to enable mature students to enter Higher Education.

Ability to apply for job roles such as:

1, SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) – for staff who are undertaking the responsibility of SENCO in the setting.

2. PANCO (Physical Activity and Nutrition Coordinator) – for staff who are undertaking the responsibility of PANCO in the setting

3.Internal progression at higher level including those with management responsibilities.

4.Leadership, mentoring, supervision and management opportunities.
