What’s it about?

The award qualification consists of two units taken over one year of study focusing on child development from 0-7 years, health and wellbeing.

The technical certificate can be studied over 1 or 2 years. This course comprises 50% work experience placements and 50% school based learning. Successful completion of units 1-7 and an externally set and assessed units along with 350 hours of work experience in a range of settings leads to a professionally recognised qualification.  

The technical diploma is studied over 2 years. This course comprises 50% work experience placements and 50% school based learning. Successful completion of units 1-14 and two externally set and assessed units along with 750 hours of work experience in a range of settings leads to a professionally recognised qualification.

This course is full time (no other subjects can be taken at the same time) and is the equivalent of three ‘A’ Levels, and carries between 240 and 360 UCAS points for progression to university (grade C and above)

Course Content:

  • Unit 1: Child development from conception to seven years.

  • Unit 2: Children’s health and wellbeing.

  • Unit 3: Providing safe environment for children.

  • Unit 4: Child health.

  • Unit 5: Play and learning.

  • Unit 6: Understanding children’s additional needs.

  • Unit 7: Observation, assessment and planning.

  • CCE1: Externally assessed synoptic paper on units 1-7.

  • Unit 9: Supporting emergent literacy.

  • Unit 10: Supporting emergent numeracy.

  • Unit 11: Preparing for school readiness.

  • Unit 12: International perspectives.

  • Unit 13: Reflective practice for professional development.

  • Unit 14: Professional partnerships in early years.

  • DCE2: Externally assessed synoptic paper on units 9 -14.

  • Unit 16: Professional practice portfolio carried out over the two years evidencing your experiences at placement

Assessment

This subject is assessed largely by coursework. There are two external examinations and an externally assessed research task. These are set throughout the two years at regular intervals.

CACHE recommends that you attend 100% of the teaching time allocated for each unit.  A record will be kept of your attendance, and if it is felt that you have attended an insufficient number of learning hours, you may be asked to take additional study before being allowed to submit the relevant assignment.
