  • Teacher's Experience
  • A lifelong love of orchestral playing was sparked one Easter for Julia aged 13 on the inaugural course of the Bedfordshire County Youth Orchestra. The seed was sown and a passion for music ignited. Whilst a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London she took part in many chamber music ensembles coached by Sidney Griller. Teachers there included Florence Hooton and Lily Phillips. Julia continued private study after leaving the Academy with Bruno Schrecker of the Allegri String Quartet and at the same time taught in schools in and around London, freelancing whenever possible. With two close friends she formed a piano trio which held a residency at Brunel University. In 1979, within 18 months of leaving the Academy, she joined the BBC Concert Orchestra, an orchestra well known for tackling a widely diverse repertoire. In 1989 she moved north and took up the post of Assistant Principal Cello with the BBC Philharmonic based in Manchester. Julia spent 24 years in this position and enjoyed working with many international conductors and soloists, both in concert and on CD. Over the years she toured extensively with the orchestra throughout Europe and in North and South America. Occasionally there were concerts in some very unusual venues, one of the most extraordinary being in the middle of the desert in Morocco. During the early 1990s Julia took a sabbatical of several months in order to study privately with the cellist Moray Welsh. His teaching proved inspirational and the period spent away from a full time schedule afforded an opportunity for reflection on both playing and teaching. Since leaving the BBC Philharmonic in 2013 Julia has further developed her love of teaching at Sheffield Music Academy and privately. She regularly coaches the cello section of the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra, and finds working with young musicians in an orchestral setting immensely rewarding. Her other passions are walking, gardening and learning Italian.
