What is CELPIP?

CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) is a computer-based English language proficiency test that assesses the English language proficiency of individuals who are applying for permanent residence or citizenship in Canada or who want to study or work in Canada.

The test is administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises., a subsidiary of the University of British Columbia (UBC). Paragon is the only Canadian company delivering Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) designated English proficiency tests.

 

CELPIP  Test Format

CELPIP Exam Syllabus

CELPIP Listening

The Listening component of the CELPIP test evaluates a candidate’s ability to understand spoken English. The test consists of two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 has eight short audio clips, and candidates need to answer multiple-choice questions based on the information they hear.

Part 2 has six longer audio clips, and candidates need to answer open-ended questions based on the information they hear.

 

CELPIP Reading

The Reading component of the CELPIP test evaluates a candidate’s ability to understand written English. The test consists of four parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4. Part 1 has six short reading passages, and candidates need to answer multiple-choice questions based on the information they read.

Part 2 has two longer reading passages, and candidates need to answer open-ended questions based on the information they read. Part 3 has four short reading passages, and candidates need to complete sentences or fill in the blanks based on the information they read.

Part 4 has one long reading passage, and candidates need to answer open-ended questions based on the information they read.

 

CELPIP Writing

The Writing component of the CELPIP test evaluates a candidate’s ability to write in English. The test consists of two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 requires candidates to write an email based on a given prompt. Part 2 requires candidates to write an essay based on a given topic.

 

CELPIP Speaking

The Speaking component of the CELPIP test evaluates a candidate’s ability to speak in English. The test consists of eight parts: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, and Part 8.

Parts 1-4 require candidates to respond to a series of questions related to their personal experiences, preferences, and opinions. Parts 5-7 require candidates to participate in a role-play scenario. Part 8 requires candidates to provide a spoken summary of information presented in a visual format.
