This CELTA course is for anyone who is thinking of teaching English to speakers of other languages, and would like to boost their career potential in this area by gaining a widely recognised and highly respected qualification.
Fee reductions are available to York St John University staff, students and alumni, but this course is also available to the general public, and several different flexible learning options are available.
Some students on courses within the School of Education, Language and Psychology will be encouraged to study for the CELTA qualification alongside their degree, at no additional cost.

What will I learn?
We will give you the training and experience you need to confidently teach English to speakers of other languages. This includes guided teaching practice with adult learners of English either in person, or online via Zoom.
You do not need any teaching experience to study with us, but if you have taught before, you can still learn a great deal and develop many new skills on this course. We will give you the techniques and confidence you need to begin teaching.
As soon as you complete the course, you will be prepared to apply for jobs around the world. Whatever your ambitions and motivations for taking the CELTA course, we can help you become the best teacher you can be.
How will I be taught?
You will receive at least 120 hours of contact time. This will include:
Tutorial support and consultation
Supervised lesson planning
6 hours of assessed teaching followed by feedback
Peer observation of teaching
Observation of experienced teachers in the classroom.
You will also be expected to dedicate time to extra reading, assignment writing and lesson planning.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in 3 ways on the CELTA course:
Teaching practice - you will complete 6 hours in total, working with 2 ability levels
Written assignments - you will complete 4 in total
Participation in classes and observations
There is no final exam, and assessment is continuous. You will need to pass your teaching practice and written assignments to complete the course.

The diploma allows learners to undertake study related to teaching in primary education. Learners will have the opportunity to develop skills which will enable progression to a range of degree level programmes including a focus on education and teaching and learning as well as child development.
