This qualification reflects the role of workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

Work involves using discretion and judgement in relation to individual support as well as taking responsibility for own outputs. Workers have a range of factual, technical and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centred support.

The course will be delivered over 52 weeks including holidays.  Class work is delivered over a 40 week block, students are then given an additional 12 weeks to complete a minimum of 120 hours of work placement.  Students may also complete the work placement hours during the 40 week delivery which may reduce the duration of the course.

Individual Support workers are also known as Aged or Disability Care Workers, Personal Care Worker or Personal Carer.  People in these roles provide general assistance, care and emotional support for aged or disabled people in their own homes and in aged and disability residential care.
