Role Of An Investment Banker:

  • Investment bankers are responsible for a wide range of duties including raising capital, providing advisory services for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and other corporate transactions, completing valuation work, and marketing the value of the banks’ expertise to client companies.
  • As the role of an IB Analyst involves performing most of the analytical analysis required for corporate transactions, their work generally entails quite a lot of presentations and models, which have been briefly explained below:
  • Presentations, known as Pitch Books in the IB world, are simply the marketing document used by bankers for their client meetings. Around 50-60 pages long (or even more!), the pitch books contain data on the investment bank’s credentials, industry landscape, company profiles & valuation, sector transactions, advisory recommendations, etc.
  • Financial Modelling involves (but is not limited to!) Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis, Relative Valuation analysis (Comparable Companies analysis and Precedent Transactions analysis), M&A and Accretion/Dilution models, LBO models, Football field analysis, etc.
  • IB Analysts and Associates typically spend a lot of time in creating and analyzing the alternatives for their client: by creating models and then by presenting them properly through pitch books.
  • Some examples can be evaluating exit options for the client- selling a company versus going for an IPO; or creating a financial model to show the accretion/dilution impact on the earnings in different scenarios for debt and equity in the transaction.
