The Certificate in Teaching English as a Second/Subsequent/Foreign Language (TESL) is an internationally recognized university-level qualification.
An entry-level qualification for individuals who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree, with a minimum average of 75%, and who wish become teachers of adult learners of English.

Successful graduates of the program are eligible for teacher certification with TESL Ontario, the provincial professional governing body; they are also eligible for application to the MA Applied Linguistics/TESL.
How Long Does it Take?
The program can be completed full-time (5 courses of 3 hours class time in each of 2 terms) during one academic year (September to April). A part-time option is available.
What does the Program Cover?
Students in this Certificate program learn the foundations of practical and theoretical issues related to the teaching of English to adult learners. The program includes observations of classes of ESL learners and practice teaching.

For students majoring in other disciplines, we also offer Minor Programs in French Studies, German, Hispanic and Latin American Studies and Italian Studies. The Department has additional language courses in Classic Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Kiswahili.
Contact the Department for more information about these courses. The Department does not recognize a challenge for credit and does not give Brock credits for online or long-distance courses offered by other institutions.
