Certificate In Teaching Enlgish To Speakers Of Other Languages (TESOL)

This course is specifically targeted at those learners who are interested in teaching English to speakers of other languages. This course provides an overview of teaching English to speakers of other languages with an emphasis on methodology. 

The course provides the learners with the essential knowledge and skills on effective teaching and opportunities for them to apply their knowledge and practise their skills in the course.

Modules Synopsis:

• ENTR105 LEARNERS AND TEACHERS
• This module provides the learner an overview of the learners’ and teachers’ learning and teaching context. This module assists the learner to understand and be aware of the different learning styles and preferences that adults bring to learning English. It also helps the learner to further understand in broad terms the context in which teaching is taking place with special reference to the learners, the physical surroundings and the availability of resources.
• ENTR106 LANGUAGE ANALYSIS AND SKILLS
• This module provides the learners the necessary skills of how to teach speaking, writing, listening and reading. It also enhances the ability of the learner to identify some significant differences between their own language and a foreign language, and demonstrate in practice the learner’s understanding of the relevance of some of these differences for the teacher and learner. It also uses different strategies, approaches and techniques to develop learners’ language knowledge, for example inductive and deductive presentations.
• ENTR107 PLANNING AND RESOURCES
• This module provides the learner the necessary skills for effective lesson planning and strategies for selecting appropriate teaching resources. It further enhances the learner’s skills in managing and planning for effective teaching to adult learners.
• ENTR108 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
• This module enables the learner to develop the teaching and practical skills for effective organization of the class. It further enhances the learner’s skills through how to manage the physical features of the classroom in order to suit the leaners and the type of lesson and at the same time ensure safety regulations are taken into account. This module also helps the learner to understand and monitor the behaviour of other learners in class and how to respond appropriately.
