The Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Special Educational Needs is aimed at professionals working in education or carrying out a caring role in nursery nursing, teaching assistance, childcare or play work, and are looking to develop knowledge and understanding of Special Educational Needs to progress within the sector as part of a new or existing role.
The modules you will study are:
Development of Children and Young People
Professional Practice in Special Educational Needs Service
Understand How to Support Children and Young People to Achieve Learning Potential
Understand How to Support Child and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
Understand How to Support Disabled Children and Young People and those with Specific Requirements
All modules will be internally assessed through the production of a portfolio. This will consist of a range of materials which may include some of the following:
Evidence you have produced at work
Written work such as essays
Case studies
Witness Testimony
Reflective logs or diaries
Presentation and/or report
Professional Discussion
Entry Requirements & Interview Process
This qualification is designed for students who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of Special Educational Needs. There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification.
However, learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 2 qualification in, for example, learning support, social care or healthcare, early years or supporting teaching and learning.
However, learners should be aged 16 or above to undertake this qualification. Applicants will be invited to an informal interview with the programme leader to discuss the course further.

On completion of this Level 3 Certificate, there are a number of opportunities for further study including:
Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools
CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
Those who also have work place experience may also apply for the Foundation Degree in Early Years.
