China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, dating back more than six millennia. In 1978, it embarked on a period of reforms and it went from an agrarian economy to the world's third-largest trading nation behind the United States and Germany.

Today, China makes 25 percent of the world's washing machines, 50 per cent of the world's cameras, and 90 percent of the world's toys and it has built enough roads to loop around the equator 16 times.

China's global trade exceeded $1.758 trillion at the end of 2006.About one-fifth of the world's population, or over 1 billion people, speak some form of Chinese as their native language.

The standardized form of spoken Chinese is Standard Mandarin (Putonghua/Guoyu), which is the official language of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan).

As well as one of four official languages of Singapore, and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

The other varieties of the Chinese language, Standard Cantonese is common and influential in Cantonese-speaking overseas communities, and remains one of the official languages of Hong Kong and of Macau.
