Course Details

Site management training and safe site supervision is critical to site safety and equally important is the level of safety awareness of the entire workforce on a construction site. Although this group of courses is often referred to generically simply as SMSTS Training, there are a number of Site Safety Plus training courses designed to provide the building, civil engineering and allied industries with a range of courses for individuals seeking to develop their skill sets. These SMSTS safety training courses are run through a network of CITB accredited Training Providers and provide comprehensive site management training that ensures all successful delegates are completely legal within their job roles onsite.

The CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) is the body which administers courses within the sector and training grants for the Site Safety Plus training courses are available to CITB levy payers.

Course Content:

The SMSTS training course covers the Health & Safety at Work Act and the regulations relevant to the Construction Industry (and other workplaces), including:

  • Site Set Up

  • CDM Regulations

  • Risk Assessment

  • Method Statements

  • Scaffolding Awareness

  • Monitoring Health & Safety

  • Electricity On Site

  • Excavations

  • Demolition

  • Confined Spaces

  • Fire Prevention

  • Management Of Contractors

Aim:

To help site managers to:

  • manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management

  • develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety and welfare

  • recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical and productive

At the end of the period of training, delegates will be aware of, and able to implement or state:

  • all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily

  • work

  • new guidance and industry best practice

  • their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.

Participants:

This course is designed for construction site managers, agents, and project directors. In addition, any other construction personnel who are, or are about to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff and workforce are recommended to attend.

Possession of the SMSTS qualification is one of the competency requirements for site managers in the Approved Code of Practice to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. Evidence of training is often required in tender applications and pre-qualification Health & Safety questionnaires.

Certification:

At the end of the CITB SMSTS course, each individual also has to pass a short test and present a suitable health and safety solution to a site activity which qualifies them for the Construction Site Managers Safety Certificate.

This certificate expires every five years. After this period certificate holders are required to sit the SMSTS two day refresher course to renew their qualification for a further five years.
