A telescopic materials handler, or telehandler, is a mobile all terrain multi-purpose machine fitted with a variable height/reach telescopic boom and a lifting attachment.

In Queensland, training is required to operate telehandlers. RIIHAN309F - Conduct telescopic materials handler operations is nationally recognised training for the following configurations:

  • a non-slewing telehandler up to 3 tonne rated capacity fitted with fixed or rotating forks, earthmoving bucket, crane jib/hook, work platform (when telehandler boom length is less than 11m), or any other attachment
  • a non-slewing telehandler over 3 tonne rated capacity with fixed or rotating forks or earthmoving bucket

Please note other licences are required to operate a telehandlers in other configurations:

  • a non-slewing telehandler over 3 tonnes and fitted with a crane jib lifting attachment you must hold a High Risk Work Licence (CN class or above)
  • a slewing telehandler any rated capacity, and any attachment, you must hold a High Risk Work Licence (C2 class or above)
  • a slewing or non-slewing telehandler any rated capacity, with a work platform attachment and a boom length over 11m then you need a WP High Risk Work Licence. 

The RIIHAN309F - Conduct telescopic materials handler operations course provides the training and assessment to conduct telescopic materials handler operations.

 

Telehandler Course outline:
This telehandler course will cover 

  • Plan and prepare for telescopic materials hander operations - including identifying hazards and environmental issues, assessing risks and implementing control measures
  • Operate telescopic materials handler in line with established requirements - including pre-start and start-up checks and assessing site and operating hazards
  • Attach, secure, lift, carry and place materials to complete work activity - including communicating with dogman and shifting the load safely
  • Select, remove, fit and use attachments for telescopic materials handler - including selecting attachments for the task and using the attachment
  • Relocating the telescopic materials handler - including preparing the machine for relocation and transporting the machine and equipment safely between worksites
  • Conduct housekeeping activities - including clean-up reporting hazards and completing documentation.

 

Certification:

On successful completion of the theory and practical assessment, students will receive:?

  • a Statement of Attainment for Conduct telescopic materials handler operations nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework
  • a photographic Telehandler card.

You will also be provided with all course materials, including a Telehandler Learners Guide.

 

Am I eligible?

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • Have basic English and Maths skills (to be able to identify and interpret workplace signs and apply yourself to the course material).?

 

Assessment:

This Telehandler training course includes assessment where participants will be required to successfully demonstrate Workplace Health and Safety knowledge and practical skills.

Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

  • Safety shoes or boots
  • workwear (hi-vis if you have it)
  • safety hardhat (optional)
