Course Details

This training course instructs learners on the identification of hazards and minimum entry requirements of working in confined spaces, the correct use of PPE and atmospheric monitoring equipment, training requirements, planning and implementing of emergency evacuations and alignment with legislative rudiments on construction sites and in industry.

 

Course Content:

  • Introduction to confined spaces
    • We explain what a confined space is, why people enter confined spaces and examples of a confined space
  • Hazards of confined spaces
    • We discuss hazard assessment, why confined spaces are hazardous, unsafe oxygen level, flammable and explosive atmospheres, ignition sources, substances hazardous to health and their sources, how we might be exposed to these substances, and exposure standards for hazardous substances, engulfment, electrical hazards, and other hazards.
  • Risk assessment for confined spaces
  • Control measures for confined spaces
    • We discuss elimination, substitution, isolation and engineering, atmospheric testing, written authority, stand-by person, hot work, emergency response, training and competence, record keeping, personal protective equipment (PPE), signs and barriers, common warning signs of an unsafe atmosphere and rescue equipment/retrieval systems.
  • Permit-required and non-permit required confined spaces
    • We identify types of confined spaces, permit-required confined spaces non-permit-required confined spaces, preparations prior to entry into a permit space “reclassified” as a non-permit space and tasks to be performed on completion of confined space operations.
  • Duties of the designated employees
    • We discuss training, entry supervisor, authorised entrant, attendants and contractor compliance.
  • Confined space rescue
    • We talk about confined space rescue, rescue categories, equipment and training.
