Why is impressive public speaking so important?

No doubt, as someone who is required to speak publicly, you have done your research. You will know what to do and could probably quote the advice that is readily available in book shops, on the internet and at training courses.

Whatever shape or form this advice and the educational packages take, they boil down essentially to the same things: plan, know your audience, gauge content, engage audience, make them happy, control body language, control pace, control breathing…and so on.

Sadly your autonomic nervous system may have other ideas. It may instruct you toward flight, fright or freeze mode and unless you have a weapon in your armoury that is more than an awareness of what a good presentation looks like you won’t be in a position to fight back and win the day.

Nerves can destroy speakers before they have even begun. We will never know how many promising careers even failed to take off just because of this.
